All of us who use computers have always been tricked by one question, "What is Hardware and what is Software".
While studying at school or college we have learned many different definitions of hardware and software. There have been lots people who have given us lots of different answers. But all those answers seem to be more appropriate for those technical persons, the computer geeks and not for the common people. So, isn't there is any simple and easy to understand answer. There's one simple and easy to understand explanation that I have come up with. I hope it will really help all of you to understand the matter properly.
We have Mr. & Mrs. ABC. living in a nice house. Mr. ABC works as an executive in a finance company. Mrs. ABC. is a house wife. After so many years she has now got tired of cooking. So, she appoints Mr. XYZ as a cook in their house. But there is one problem, Mr. XYZ doesn't know how to cook (isn't it funny – a cook doesn't know how to cook). So, Mrs. ABC comes up with an idea, she writes down the recipes and instructions on a note book and tells MR. XYZ to read the instructions before preparing any dish.
Now whenever Mr. ABC wants to have something like Tea, Coffee or any other food item, he orders Mr. XYZ to prepare it for him. After getting the order Mr. XYZ reads the instructions (written down by Mrs. ABC) from the note book and prepares the dish according to the instructions and serves it to Mr. ABC.
In the above example, we can see that though Mr. XYZ exists physically he cannot work without the written instructions given by Mrs. ABC. Here Mr. XYZ is the hardware and the instructions written by Mrs. ABC is the software. The hardware works only after reading the instructions i.e. the software; without the written instructions (software) the hardware cannot work. Mrs. ABC who has written down the instructions is the software programmer. She writes down the instructions in a proper way that Mr. XYZ (hardware) can understand. And Mr. ABC is the user or the operator; he uses the hardware to get the result i.e. the food item like tea, coffee etc.
I hope the above example makes it very easy to understand the concept of hardware and software. Next I will also try to explain the use of all the parts inside a computer in the same way as this one.
